thanks again @davycoquette for tagging me!
“Mm-hmm,” Quinn said. “Listen, Nat—” They beckoned him back out into the hall so as not to disturb the sleeping Alex. “I’m going to take you shopping this week for some new formal clothes. We can get something tailored for you, whatever style you like.”
Nat stared at them blankly, apparently not realising the appropriate reaction to this was glee. “Oh,” he said. “Uh… thanks?”
Quinn tried not to let this dampen their mood. Nat in a suit, Nat with a little bow tie, Nat with his hair braided with flowers... They’d get him excited about this if it killed them. They would find something that’d make him feel good, make him feel handsome. They would get him to crack a smile.
“Let me know when you’re free,” Quinn urged. “I’ll put it in my calendar.”
Nat nodded mildly.
I'm tagging anyone whose age ends in 3 and anyone who prefers summer over winter!

Every now and then I remember the times I would mention to my flatmate that I was thinking of buying myself something reasonably expensive (that I had been eyeing up for months and had budgeted for) and she'd tell me that I shouldn't spend that much money on something I didn't need and it would be stupid etc etc while she regularly impulse bought things that cost at least as much and she would use once (while complaining that she was under a lot of financial stress and couldn't afford <$3/week for 2 months for a rental washing machine when ours broke). She is... perhaps not my first call for financial advice
#like I get that you're financially stressed but also it feels a bit rich to complain about it when you're on student allowance (not loan)#and your parents still contribute to things for you even though allowance is supposed to be for people whose parents can't afford to help#and you get multiple scholarships a year even though you're technically not eligible for half of them anymore but then as soon as the money#comes in from those you spend it all on a brand new dress for your sister's hen's do picnic because you can't wear the same dress as you#will for the actual hen's night or the wedding. Better buy a full price one at an expensive store instead of looking in a single op shop or#borrowing one from one of your three sisters who are all roughly the same size#god life must be so tough for you getting the same amount of money as the rest of us on student loan except you only have to pay back half#like the only money you have to live off is the same as what the rest of us get + scholarships (plural) plus what you earnt in your summer#internship? how could you possibly survive??#anyway I am NOT a fan of people who are like 'oh you say you have no money for rent but you have a phone?' because that's bullshit#and the whole 'millenials need to stop eating avocado toast so they can buy a house' thing is also bullshit#however. If you pay $60/week for a gym when you have access to the free uni one (or any other gym in the country is like $20)#and you buy uber eats multiple times a week for like $30+ each time despite having a premade meal in the fridge. and you get multiple#scholarships which mean you are arguably among the more well off students. AND you impulse buy things that cost over $100 regularly#then maybe the problem is not that you don't have enough money to split the rental costs of a washing machine (<$3 each/week)#maybe you are just bad with money#which is fine like it's not like it's unfixable it's just annoying when you act like you're worse off than people whose only money is what#they get from student loan each week so they eat beans on rice for dinner for a week#because that's all they could afford (yes I know people who did this. Yes she complained more than them)#so no I don't think I'm gonna be taking financial advice from you babes because one of us has entertained the idea of a budget to help with#finances and it's not you xx#(she turned down offers of financial help/advice/books to borrow from multiple people multiple times. I 100% get that you might not want to#talk to people about it especially your friends but we had multiple books on finances lying around the flat which she always said she didn't#need. And then she'd continue to complain that she didn't have enough money#god forbid you suggest something like going to a cheaper gym (or worse. The perfectly fine free uni gym!)#again. Her gym cost $60/week for most of last year until they brought in a student discount which was 'only' $45/week#the next most expensive gym chain I can find costs maybe $30/week for the highest membership level#to get what she was getting she would only need like a $20 membership#BUT to be fair she wouldn't get such strong culty vibes at any other gym#lol anyway sorry for the rant. I could keep going but apparently you can only have 30 tags and this is the last one

Wear a Dress Day
Wear a Dress Day is celebrated every June 1 and gives women an opportunity to sport their favorite dress. This includes dresses of all sorts, designs, and patterns — all that is important is that it’s a dress you love. Why create a day that is all about dresses, you ask? Well, the fact is, dresses are easy to wear and super comfy, especially in the hot summer weather when you begin to sweat the minute you step out of an air-conditioned space. So use this occasion to dump your jeans and adorn a cute dress that makes you look oh so lovely.
History of Wear a Dress Day
Amongst various interesting days celebrated across the U.S., one fun occasion is Wear a Dress Day. Dedicated to all women — or basically anyone who wants to wear a dress — the day is all about dressing up and having fun! The origins of the day are unclear but what we do know is, its observation started in 2010 and led to many women taking photos of themselves in dresses and posting them on social media with the hashtag #WearADressDay.
The question is, why are dresses so important to the ladies? Well, this is mostly because there is a long history of how dresses evolved over time and not all were the most comfortable. For instance, from the 16th century till the 19th century, dresses were often worn with uncomfortable corsets that made it hard for women to even breathe. While the dresses looked gorgeous, they were also extremely uncomfortable to wear since they were created out of various layers of heavy fabrics. In 1775, the dresses got bigger and fancier, making it tough for women to move around with ease.
It wasn’t until 1860 when the dress fabric became simpler and easier to wear, but the size of dresses only began to decrease in the 1900s. By the 1920s, the hemlines began to reduce and dresses became more enjoyable to wear. Today, women can wear short dresses, loose dresses, tight dresses, or full-length gowns without worrying about rigid social norms — and it’s this empowerment that makes us want to celebrate Wear a Dress Day!

How to Celebrate Wear a Dress Day
Throw a party of your favorite era
Donate some dresses
Wear your best dress!
This means you have endless options, ranging from the ’60s to the funky ’90s. The aim is to use the opportunity to wear one of your favorite dresses in public.
Since everyone loves dresses, use this day to donate some of the dresses you no longer wear to charity.
Pick out your favorite dress from your wardrobe and make a plan with friends so you can wear it out. Whether it's a party dress or a cute skater dress, anything that makes you look and feel good will work.
5 Fun Facts About Dresses

Why Dresses Are Important
They are easy to wear
Dresses make a style statement
What you wear affects your psychology
Short dresses and maxis are super easy to wear, they are comfortable, affordable, and make you feel powerful and feminine. Short dresses are also more desirable for ladies residing in countries with a hot climate.
While everyone likes to suit up once in a while, the variety of dress designs available make it easy for you to make a style statement — even on a low budget!
The ‘little black dress,’ for instance, has become an essence of femininity, and women sporting this color often feel more confident and sure of themselves.

"HUBBY SHOWED TEETH OF WIFE INTO THROAT,” Toronto Star. February 24, 1933. Page 2.  ---- Abraham Bornstein Warned to Keep Away From Spouse - Girl Stole Dress --- "She accused me of keeping company with a Chinaman," complained Mrs. Hazel Gauditt. testifying against Albertine Morris, charged with assault in women's court to-day.
Both parties were placed under $50 to keep the peace.
Abraham Bornstein shoved his wife's false teeth down her throat, so Magistrate Patterson placed him under $200 bond to keep the peace and warned Abraham to keep away from his wife. He was given the alternative of six months in jail.
Charged with theft of a dress, Sadie Zulyn, 150 Franklin, pleaded not guilty, claiming that she had never been in the store in question.
But Sadie was remanded for sentence by a skeptical court and put on probation for year. Restitution of the dress was ordered.
"Investigations show that you're a fine fellow until you get to drinking," Magistrate Margaret Patterson told Louis Neil, convicted of assault. Court placed him under $200 bond to keep the peace. He was further put on probation for one year and ordered to abstain from alcoholic liquor.
Mrs. Elizabeth Hunt told the court that Joseph Hutchinson and his wife Nellie had given her a black eye, but she refused to testify further because Joe was her brother. The charge was withdrawn.
"He broke the drain, he broke the sink, he pulled the paper off the walls," complained Mrs. D. Ginsler, testifying against John McMaster, whom she accused of damaging the house which she had rented to him. The place was so filthy I thought I would be suffocated. I swam in the cellar."
"Did the medical health department tel! you the place was not habitable before you went into this man house?" "No."
McMaster, married, with 10 children, denied that the house was in good condition when he took it over. He was ordered to repair the drain. "For the other damage the complainant will have to sue in division court," ruled Magistrate Patterson,

Not cosplay or LARP, but I used to do street busking as a living statue in Chicago where I'd get all costumed and silvered up at home and then take the train into the downtown area where I busked, and there was a cafe across the street from my spot where I ate lunch.
Now, I've got lots of treasured interactions and memories from the actual busking, but there's just something special about how people would interact with me on the train and in that cafe. Seeing kids light up at the silver statue eating a sandwich two tables over, or watching people do double takes and start grinning on the train (Had one person who dropped money in my hat on the train 'cause I made him smile. I didn't even have the hat - it was just sitting in the box in my lap with my bag inside it because that's how I had to carry it.)
There's just something extra special, I guess, about seeing someone in costume doing every-day normal things that brings so much magic and wonder to people's lives. I loved it.
something ive noticed after being a hobby cosplayer for years is that in a lot of places the general consensus seems to be that wearing costumes in public is weird and/or socially unacceptable, but whenever I'm in costume in public while on the train to the con venue or having a photoshoot on location or something, people by and large fucking love my costume. they think it's so cool. kids think my costume rocks. their parents are impressed that I made it myself. random grandmas tell me my armor kicks ass. I was at a japanese garden once and barely got around to doing the photoshoot me and my homies came there to do because swathes of visitors who had never heard the word cosplay before were lining up to take a picture with me.
it's the same thing with adjacent hobbies like larp or reenactment or fursuiting, the general image of the hobby is that you're weird nerds (and probably also sex perverts) for playing dressup despite not being a child but when you're actually in costume the response from random normies is categorically positive. I inevitably get weird looks from the kind of people who think having a tattoo is an affront to god but they give me that look for just existing with blue hair and pronouns too and the people who actually talk to me always do because they wanted to tell me they love my costume. and the response that always gets me the most is when they say it looks fun but they would never dare to do the same. it's such a shame. why did wearing a silly little costume have to become an act of bravery.
